FAQ's1. Do I have to be German to participate in these groups? No, it is not necessary. There only needs to be a strong desire to teach your child German songs, games and culture... 2. How do I raise a bilingual child? There are many strategies available on the web, but mainly you use positive reinforcement and tangible rewards. The first step is to have them meet other children who speak German by joining a group like this one. 3. How do I get my child to speak German? Whenever they want something, that is the perfect time to ask they make this request in the German Language. Speak German to them and surround them with German media and books. Make it easy and fun for them to speak the language. Oma and Opa can be your best partners. 4. What can I do at home to promote speaking a second language? Read German books to them. Speak German with your spouse. Encourage every attempt at communication. The other thing is to think twice about sending them to Preschool, since that is when they will be surrounded by an English-speaking world that may change their desire to learn more. Instead you can create a playgroup that meets several days a week and offers activities in the German language. By Kindergarten age, your child can attend one of the four German Schools in the Lower Mainland. Eventually, it is my dream to offer a German Preschool Program. 5. Where do I go from here? Start by turning to Google (www.google.com) and typing in "how to raise a bilingual child". You will get many websites to choose from. Find supportive friends/relatives who will be your partners in success. Finally, never give up. But also get your priorities straight. You want your child to benefit from learning a second language. You want your child to enjoy some aspects of their heritage and culture. But the last thing most parents want is to constantly have to nag their child/ren. Finding the balance is the challenge. Viel Glueck! Und Viel Spass! |
